The program allows you to access your documents from any computer because they are stored on the web.  Benefits of dropbox over Googledocs is that you do not need to have an email acount to use the service.  Dropbox will also allow two people to work on the same file simultaneously, saving both copies so there doesn't have to be a long chain of emails back and forth.
